3DS Rockets Up Japanese Sales Charts After Price Drop

The Nintendo 3DS shot to the top of Japan's weekly hardware sales charts for the week ending August 14, following an August 12 price cut of 40 percent. Media Create reports sales of 196,077 3DS units in the country for the week, confirming similar sales numbers reported earlier by Enterbrain and Nikkei. Many Nintendo-published 3DS titles also saw an increase in sales for the week. The increased 3DS sales dwarfed those for the second place PlayStation Portable, which also saw sales increase 13 percent from last week to over 40,000 units. Nintendo DS sales were down slightly from last week, dipping below 8,000 units for the week. In the home console space, PlayStation 3 sales continue to narrowly outpace those for the Wii, with both systems hovering around 20,000 weekly sales. The Xbox 360 and PS2 continue to hang on at the bottom of the sales charts, each selling around 1,500 units for the week.
