A Switch 2 exclusive Splatoon spinoff was just shadow-announced on Nintendo Today
Nintendo is already putting its Nintendo Today mobile application to work. The company just shadow-announced a new Splatoon spin-off called Splatoon Raiders through the smartphone app by simply dropping it into the news feed.

The trailer looks to be a single-player adventure set within the Splatoon universe and is pitched as a brand new story within an unexplored region called the Spirhalite Islands.

The footage shows two squids stranded on the island chain after their helicopter crashes following an encounter with a mysterious phenomenon. They're then shown exploring the environment alongside a chunky robot companion.

A voiceover describes the project as the "first ever Splatoon spin-off game" and explains the title will launch exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2.

We would have shared footage or screenshots, but for some reason Nintendo is preventing users from recording media from within Nintendo Today—at least on iOS.

Nintendo making good on its promise to speak directly to players

What's perhaps more fascinating than Splatoon Raiders itself is how Nintendo chose to reveal a new entry in one of its major franchises.

Opting to unveil a Switch 2 exclusive via a smartphone application that only launched in March is a pretty big swing, but it shows Nintendo is making good on its promise to communicate more directly with its fanbase.

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto helped the company introduce the application and said it was envisioned as a "new channel based on the concept of delivering information to [players] directly."

If today's announcement is indicative of that strategy, it seems like Nintendo will be making some pretty big announcements through the platform.

Splatoon Raiders has been revealed mere days after the Switch 2 launched on June 5. Pre-orders for the console—which is the sequel to what looks set to become Nintendo's best-selling console of all time—were in high demand and the company expects the device to shift 15 million units by March 2026.
