A recent report from Unity offers a closer look at how games made with its engine perform on mobile devices.
While the blog post runs through a lot of useful per-platform metrics, what’s especially notable here is the difference in daily playtime between users on different platforms. Despite the fact that a player’s operating system has little bearing on how many times they open unity-created games per day, Android users spend 34 percent more time playing those games than iOS users.
Games made with Unity, the report says, have been installed close to 5 billion times across 2.4 million mobile devices in just the past quarter. Though Android and iOS players have roughly the same number of daily play sessions, Android users spend 34 percent more time playing Unity-based games daily.
On average, Android users opened Unity-made games 2.4 times per day, and played for 11.18 minutes each time. All together, that makes for roughly 26.6 minutes spent playing daily on Android devices.
During the last quarter, iOS devices saw just slightly fewer daily play sessions than Android, averaging out at 2.38 games opened a day. Overall, the length of iOS sessions were considerably shorter than the other platform, with players investing an average of 19.8 minutes into these games on iOS per day.
The report also notes that the screen size of an Android or iOS device doesn’t seem to have much impact on how much time players invest into individual gameplay sessions, though Android phones with smaller screens do have roughly 5 times more play sessions than larger devices or tablets. That number is similar for iOS, but smaller devices only accounted 2 times more sessions than tablets on Apple's operating system.
