Apple WWDC Keynote To Unveil iOS 5, iCloud Services

Apple announced today that Steve Jobs will be discussing the next version of iOS and a newly revealed iCloud suite of services at a Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on the morning of June 6. The keynote presentation, which overlaps with Microsoft's pre-E3 press presentation at 10am Pacific time, will also discuss a new update to Macintosh's OS X called Lion. Jobs' keynote will come almost exactly one year after the announcement of iOS 4 at the 2010 WWDC. The launch of that update later in June added many important features to iPhones and iPod Touches, including multitasking and folder organization for apps. It's currently unknown exactly what Apple has planned for the iCloud service, which was mentioned for the first time in today's announcement. Industry watchers have long suspected Apple will unveil a cloud service to allow for remote storage of apps, songs and other content to minimize the need for costly internal storage on iOS devices. Gaming services including Valve's Steam and Sony's PSN already allow users to synchronize backups of saved game data through the cloud. Other cloud gaming services are based around synchronizing player input with live streaming game video and audio through internet-connected devices -- streaming game service OnLive has even been demonstrated on iOS devices in the past.
