Automaton, a fledgling developer based in Cambridge, has secured $10 million in funding to create an online survival game that could support up to 1000 players at once.
As reported by VentureBeat, the unnamed title will let players explore a massive 12km squared map, and will feature character progression, social hubs, and a player-driven narrative.
Automaton plans to build its online world using Improbable's SpatialOS cloud computing technology, which means it's the second time in as many weeks a studio using that tech has netted a substantial amount of cash to push on with development.
Last Tuesday, Surgeon Simulator developer Bossa Studios nabbed $10 million to bolster the development of its MMO sandbox, Worlds Adrift.
Bossa also made headlines yesterday by announcing the hiring of former Half-Life, Left for Dead, and Portal scribe, Chet Faliszek.
