The Borderlands series is primarily known for two things: its abundance of unique weapons and its over-the-top, often crude/juvenile humor. Gearbox has already confirmed "infinitely varied loot drops" in Borderlands 4, although it sounds like the game may be toning down the toilet humor.
While we admittedly haven't seen much in terms of narrative storytelling from the teaser trailers released thus far, Borderlands 4 narrative director Sam Winkler is critical of its predecessor's toilet humor.
Over on X, Winkler was asked if the dark vibes of the latest Borderlands 4 trailer suggest a more serious tone for the game -- possibly even a shift towards more dark humor. Winkler couldn't reveal much, but he remains "firm" in his criticism of Borderlands 3's "overabundance of toilet humor."
Not at liberty to talk much about the content of BL4, but I remain firm in my criticism of BL3's overabundance of toilet humor.

When another user jokingly asked if this means we won't be able to use the "poop poop fart 4000 while doing a mission to clean up porta-potties with my companion skibidi toilet!?!?!?", Winkler responded: "I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears."
I’m not gonna say there’s no toilets but if the word skibidi ships in the game under my watch I’m gonna cry real tears. Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder

Of course, this doesn't mean that all humor has been cut from Borderlands 4. In fact, in response to Winkler's comments, the official Gearbox account cleverly responded: "This is the sh** you tweet about while I'm out." So clearly, the potty humor is still well alive within the walls of the developer.
This is the shit you tweet about while I’m out.

Gearbox gave us our first look at the new Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4 at The Game Awards earlier this month. The trailer also teased some of the new locations we'll visit and the action that awaits on the planet of Kairos.
Borderlands 4 is a mayhem-fueled looter shooter, jam-packed with billions of weapons, outrageous enemies, and intense co-op action. Break free from a dangerous hidden planet as one of four new badass Vault Hunters.
Break free from the oppressive Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. Now a world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across the planet.
Ignite a resistance and blast your way through mechanical monstrosities, bloodthirsty bandits, and vicious beasts. Amass an arsenal of death-dealing firepower to wreak havoc as you tear your way across Kairos.
Our first look at Borderlands 4 gameplay will come in early 2025. The highly anticipated blockbuster shooter will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC next year, probably in the latter half of 2025.
