Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 & Warzone 2 appear to be completely broken on AMD RX Vega series GPUs

It appears that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty Warzone 2 are currently broken on AMD RX Vega series GPUs. According to multiple reports, owners of AMD RX Vega 56 and Vega 64 cannot launch the game at all.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 were playable on the Vega GPUs at launch. However, with the release of Season 3, the game is no longer playable on these GPUs. Upon launching it, owners of Vega GPUs receive the following DirectX error.

When MW2 launched in October 2022, the Vega 64 was able to push over 70fps at 1080p/Extreme Settings. In short, this particular GPU was powerful enough to provide a smooth gaming experience.

On April 17th, Beenox acknowledged this issue. However, there is still no fix for this, almost half a month afterward.

We're investigating a crash on boot affecting AMD VEGA users on WZ2 and MWII. The team is actively working to get it fixed.

So, this is a PSA article for those encountering this DirectX error. If you own a Vega GPU, you can no longer play Modern Warfare 2 or Warzone 2. We also don’t know when Beenox will fix it. Here is hoping that the team will push a hotfix in the coming weeks.

Kudos to our reader “Oren” for informing us about this issue!
