Costa Rica has launched its first 5G Standalone (SA) network, marking a significant milestone in the country's digital transformation. The deployment is part of a six-year agreement between Ericsson and Liberty Latin America.

The network features fully native 5G infrastructure using Ericsson's dual-mode 5G Core and advanced Radio Access Network technology. Over 1,400 sites are live, reaching around 3.7 million users with faster speeds, lower latency, and greater reliability.

Fixed Wireless Access is also expanding, offering high-speed internet in areas without fibre or cable. The system supports IoT, mobile broadband, and emerging tech through network slicing and programmable APIs.

Ericsson says the new infrastructure will enable real-time automation and benefit healthcare, agriculture, and tourism industries. AI capabilities will enhance flexibility and innovation.

Liberty Latin America's Guillermo Ponce called the launch a step towards economic growth and service expansion. Ericsson's Sean Cryan highlighted the potential for better user experience and technology leadership.

A 2022 report by Ericsson and Analysys Mason predicts that 5G could boost the GDP of Costa Rica by up to 0.46% by 2035. The initiative sets a regional benchmark for future 5G adoption across Central America.
