DC Universe Online Sees 1M Registrations In First Free-To-Play Week

Following its move to the free-to-play model, Sony Online Entertainment's DC Universe Online MMO has recorded over one million new player registrations. The game became free-to-play last week, and quickly gathered 120,000 new player registrations within the space of two days. SCE has now revealed that over one million players registered to play the game during the seven days after the move to free-to-play, with an exact 50/50 split between PC and PlayStation 3 registrations. Sony's executive director of development Lorin Jameson explained, "DCUO now joins the ranks of SOE's other successful free-to-play titles, including Free Realms and Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures." "Our business model philosophy of 'Free to Play Your Way' makes DCUO accessible to every type of player so they can choose to play the game in a way that suits them best." SOE launched a digital marketplace for DC Universe Online earlier this year, with items available to buy through a microtransactions model. This is still available as part of the free-to-play model.
