Despite promises, Marvel’s Avengers now has gameplay-related microtransactions

Prior to the release of Marvel’s Avengers, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics were stating that the game would not feature lootboxes or pay-to-win mechanics. The teams were claiming that the game would only feature cosmetic microtransactions. However, the latest update for Marvel’s Avengers introduced paid XP boosters.

Gamers can currently pay real money in order to obtain consumables which can temporarily boost their amount of XP they receive or increase the number of resources they collect. Basically, these are paid XP boosters, which are gameplay-related MTX.

This also raises a yellow flag for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Square Enix and EIDOS Montreal have stated that the game won’t have any micro-transcations. However, this may possibly be a PR stunt and nothing more.

It will be interesting to see how the fans of Marvel’s Avengers will react to this. It will also be interesting to see whether this decision will affect the sales of Guardians of the Galaxy.
