Disney announced today that it will be launching a bigger version of its Disney Infinity line of games next year that will include new playsets, new game modes and new characters from popular Disney franchises -- including the Marvel superheroes. The move isn't terribly surprising in light of the fact that Disney Infinity has been the most profitable game Disney Interactive has released in a good long while. Disney's game business swung to profits after an extended slump late last year thanks to the remarkable success of the original Disney Infinity. Shortly thereafter, the company ousted Disney Interactive co-president (and former Playdom CEO) John Pleasants and consolidated the business away from mobile game development. Earlier this year Disney Interactive reported a sizable bump in revenue thanks to Disney Infinity, and now the company is leaning into its one hot product with a new line of games branded Disney Infinity 2.0. The first new game in the line, Disney Infinity 2.0: Marvel Super Heroes, is expected to launch this fall for current and previous-gen consoles. As you might expect, the character level cap will be increased, a new skill tree will be added, and the game's Toy Box mode will be expanded to let players do things like create building interiors. All Disney Infinity character data, power discs, and Toy Box mode save data from Disney Infinity will work in the new games. Also, the RFID-reading character stand accessory from the first line of games will work with Disney Infinity 2.0 -- which we can only guess will likely play host to more popular -- and profitable -- Disney franchises going forward.
