Square Enix has announced that Dungeon Siege III, the next installment in the long-running RPG series, will be released in late spring, 2011. The title, being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, will see a European released on May 27, followed by May 31 in North America. Action will once again return to the Kingdom of Ehb during a time of conflict, and provide solo missions with multiple customizable heroes, plus drop-in, drop-out multiplayer options. In development for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC, the game will also feature "weighty decisions that impact alliances, enemies and ultimately the storyline of the game." Ami Blaire, vice president of marketing at Square Enix, said "[Square Enix] have partnered with Obsidian to bring this critically acclaimed classic franchise back in an all new, re-imagined form". "With its heart-pounding action, epic lore and an endless variety of quests, Dungeon Siege III is a must-have for any video game collection." Obsidian revealed last year that Square Enix had taken ownership of the Dungeon Siege franchise outright, and would be publishing the third game in the series. The announcement comes as Square Enix posted a 77% fall in profits for the first nine months of the 2010 fiscal year. Yoichi Wada, president and representative director at Square Enix, attributed the fall in earnings to "intensifying competition in the console game market."
