Ex-Ubisoft creative director says that every online shooter will have a battle-royale mode within a year

Alex Hutchinson, former creative director at Ubisoft Montreal who has worked in triple-A games like Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3, claimed that pretty much all online shooters will feature a battle-royale mode within a year.

As Alex noted, Battle-Royale can be considered as a mode – like death-match – and not as a genre. While we don’t know if he has any inside info, Alex did confirm that both COD and BF will feature a battle-royale mode, and expects that every other online shooter will feature a BR mode within a year.

Battle Royals is not a game type, it’s a game mode, like death match. It’s easy to build on top of virtually any shooter you already have. It’ll be shipping by default CoD and BF and every other online shooter within a year.

Of course developers will have to optimize their engines in order to support such modes in their games. However, Alex believes that most developers will see the effort to implement a battle-royale mode in triple-A games as a choice rather than an obstacle.

But more seriously: for the big players, the effort required is a choice not an obstacle.

This obviously does not surprise us. And to be honest, there is nothing wrong with a BR mode in every online shooter, as long as this mode does not have a negative impact on the development of all other modes (I’m looking at you COD: Black Ops 4).
