GDC Online: Gaikai Partners With Level 3 For Online Infrastructure

At GDC Online in Austin on Tuesday, cloud gaming service provider Gaikai announced that Colorado's Level 3 Communications will be providing its internet infrastructure backbone. Gaikai -- which offers cloud gaming services through partnerships with companies like EA and Walmart, rather than direct-to-consumer services -- will utilize Level 3's proprietary low latency technology, including its High Speed IP service and colocation. Level 3 has several other game-related partnerships in place, with clients including Bigpoint, Wargaming.net and CCP. Gaikai CEO David Perry said in a statement Tuesday that the partnership would help the company grow to "over 100 million users" in the next year. Gaikai is one of a handful of companies competing for dominance in the emerging game streaming market. For an overview on the state of that industry, refer to this Gamasutra feature.
