Google is now allowing Android app developers to begin testing in-app purchases run through the Android Market, in advance of a full roll-out of the feature next week. Android developers can already sell in-app purchases -- such as game items and levels -- using third-party solutions from companies including PayPal and Zong. But this new program allows app users to make in-app purchases using their existing Google Market account, providing a unified solution for both developers and consumers. In-app purchases have continued to drive an increasing portion of mobile app revenue since the feature was launched on iOS in late 2009. Google has long-promised internal support for the feature, which was widely expected to launch in May. The FTC has recently said it will begin an investigation into mobile in-app purchases after complaints from politicians and constituents over the clarity of the link between virtual currency and real currency.
