Hello Games has pulled back the curtain on a huge No Man's Sky update, which brings base building, freighters, and farming to the procedurally generated space sim.

The game launched back in August after years of hype, and the initial response from players was mixed to say the least.

Many cried foul, and suggested the studio had misled them by promising features that either didn't exist or had been pulled prior to launch. Others praised the title for its laid back, zen-inducing gameplay.

All-in-all, the frenzied, polarizing response prompted Hello Games to go dark in an attempt to push out updates and fixes as soon as possible. And now the studio has resurfaced to launch the Foundation Update, which attempts to right some of those perceived wrongs and build a base for even bigger things in the future.

"The discussion around No Man's Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about," explained the studio.

"Coming from five years of intense development, immediately after No Man's Sky released the team spent six weeks updating the game with seven patches across both platforms.

"In the nine weeks since then our small team has been hard at work on development, testing and certification for the Foundation Update. It won’t be our biggest update, but it is the start of something."

The fact that the Foundation Update won't be the biggest is particularly telling, as it suggests the studio has been working around the clock to bring the game up to speed.

As well as those new features mentioned above, the update also ushers in a number of technical improvements such as temporal anti-aliasing and a more streamlined user interface.
