Earlier today Samsung formally revealed its Gear VR headset, and several developers across the AAA-indie spectrum have already stepped forward and pledged to develop games for the platform. So far it's mostly mobile-focused developers, which is unsurprising in light of the fact that the Gear VR is basically a head-mounted shell that you strap a Galaxy Note 4 smartphone into; the phone acts as your VR screen, and developers can then source player input from either a Bluetooth gamepad or the touchpad and back button on the right side of the Gear VR headset. The headset is powered by Oculus VR's Mobile SDK, which it developed in partnership with Samsung. Here's a list of the developers and games we expect to come to Gear VR, either when a beta version of the hardware is released this fall as the "Innovator Edition" or shortly thereafter: - Imangi Studios: Temple Run VR - DeNA: Protocol Zero (working title) - Side-Kick Games: Romans 360 - Fireproof Games: Omega Agent - Ed McNeill: Darknet - Robot Invader: Unannounced title - Ghost Machine: Motorsport Revolution - nDreams: Gunner - Harmonix: Unannounced title - White Door Games: Dreadhalls - Innerspace VR: Playhead If you're interested in developing for the Gear VR, you may be better off getting in touch with someone at Oculus than Samsung. Speaking to developers working on Gear VR titles, Gamasutra has learned that Oculus has been heavily involved in supporting development for the Gear VR via its Mobile SDK. Oculus expects to release the Mobile SDK to developers this October via its Oculus VR Developer Center. If you're already developing your own Gear VR game, we'd love to hear about your work.
