What to Know
- Manage favorites through menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks > Import and Backup.
- You can copy bookmarks to Firefox from another browser or from an HTML or JSON file.
- Those same formats are supported when exporting bookmarks from Firefox.
This article explains how to add bookmarks to Firefox from a backup or another browser installed on your computer. It also covers the exporting process, which is useful for backing up favorites or using them in Chrome or another web browser.
How to Import Bookmarks to Firefox
Walk through these steps to copy bookmarks to Firefox in just a few minutes, whether they exist in a different browser or as a file.
-
Select the three lines at the top right of Firefox to open the menu, then choose Bookmarks.
-
Choose Manage bookmarks at the bottom.
-
Select Import and Backup, then pick one of these options:
- Restore lets you import bookmarks from a previous date and time or from a saved JSON file.
- Import Bookmarks from HTML lets you add bookmarks that are saved in an HTML file. Choose this if you had previously exported bookmarks to this format in Firefox or another browser.
- Import Data from Another Browser opens the Import Browser Data wizard for adding bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions, and other details from other browsers on your computer.
-
For this tutorial, we've chosen the option to import data from another browser. When the wizard opens, select the browser, Chrome in this case.
-
Select Import all available data and then choose what to add to Firefox. Depending on the browser, options might include extensions, autofill data, passwords, and browsing history. Select Bookmarks or Favorites to import those only.
-
Select Import.
-
Wait while bookmarks and other items are imported. Click Done to start using the bookmarks in Firefox.
To keep your bookmarks, tabs, and passwords synced across all your devices, create a Mozilla account and sign in to it through Firefox. This eliminates the need to back up those items just to re-import them on a different device.
How to Export Bookmarks From Firefox
Transferring your Mozilla Firefox bookmarks/favorites is a fairly easy process. Export your bookmarks to use them in a different browser or to back them up. This process is much quicker than importing bookmarks.
-
Press Ctrl+Shift+O in Windows or go to menu > Bookmarks > Manage bookmarks.
-
Select Import and Backup.
-
Select Backup to create a JSON file, or Export Bookmarks to HTML to make an HTML file. Both can be re-imported into Firefox later; pick HTML unless you have a specific reason for the bookmarks to exist in the other format.
With your Firefox bookmarks now available in a file, it's easy to import them into Chrome, Opera, or some other browser.
