Kinect Launch Titles Use Scaleform GFX UIs

Scaleform revealed that its flash-based UI middleware is used in four of Kinect's launch titles: Rare's Kinect Sports, Frontier Developments' Kinectimals, BigPark's Kinect Joy Ride and Good Science's Kinect Adventure. Rare lead project manager Salvatore Fileccia said that the range of sports in Kinect Sports, plus a new controller-free interface unfamiliar to even seasoned consumers meant that user interface design was especially important to his project, and that using Scaleform helped the team work more quickly. UIs designed with Scaleform GFx are compatible with all the voice and motion inputs that Kinect games require, the company says. "We’re thrilled to be used in Microsoft’s launch titles for Kinect," says Scaleform president and CEO Brendan Iribe, praising the interface innovation that Kinect brings to the market. The most recent edition of Scaleform GFX, 4.0, supports Flash 10 and ActionScript 3.0 and claims a two- to five-fold performance boost over previous GFx iterations. The company has been taking steps to expand its business, including implementing support for 3D menus in games using GFx, integration with Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and a spike in growth in South Korea.
