Nintendo has announced that movie and video streaming from Netflix will be available today via the Nintendo 3DS handheld for all Netflix members. Those Netflix consumers who pay for a monthly unlimited streaming plan can download the free Netflix application through the 3DS eShop and watch TV episodes and films streamed straight to the console. The service launches with a selection of 2D programmes and movies, with select stereoscopic 3D movies set to appear sometime soon. [UPDATE: Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime clarified that Netflix was a 2D service, augmented by selected stereoscopic trailers and videos also available on the 3DS. Netflix has yet to announce any support for streaming stereoscopic 3D content.] Netflix was added to Nintendo's Wii console early last year, and shortly after Nintendo revealed that nearly 1 million gamers were using the service. The publisher has now revealed that Netflix on the Wii attracts more than 1.5 million users on a daily basis. Content available to watch include movies, documentaries, reality shows and sitcoms. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime explained, "The new Netflix application looks great, plays great and is a fantastic consumer experience." "It gives Nintendo 3DS owners access to an amazing wealth of movies and TV shows, which they can watch conveniently from thousands of free Wi-Fi access points across the country." "Nintendo is a terrific partner with Netflix," said Reed Hastings, co-founder and CEO of Netflix. "We're excited to extend the partnership to include streaming on Nintendo 3DS."
