Pokémon Go developer Niantic has acquired the team behind Evertoon, a social video-making app released for mobile platforms in 2016.
Niantic says the acquisition of the Evertoon team will aid the company in building and introducing new social systems to its suite of games, noting that that the team brings with it a "wealth of talent and experience in mobile products, tools for creativity, and community building."
With the acquisition, the Evertoon app itself is losing its online features at the end of November as the team refocuses to instead bring social features to Niantic's current and future games. While the app will remain operational for offline use, its community features will no longer be accessible.
"Through the course of our company, we learned a great deal about building community and social experiences. We’ve gotten to know other companies who would derive great value from this," reads the announcement shared to Evertoon's website. "Today we’d like to share with you that Niantic has acquired the Evertoon team. We will be adding a social platform to Niantic’s amazing roster of games, including Pokémon Go, Ingress, and future titles. We’ll also be contributing engineering leadership experience. Niantic’s games are unique in bringing people together in the real world, and we’re excited to weave our expertise into them."
