Nintendo has responded to recent reports that the 3DS will be region-locked, with the company stating there will be "different versions of Nintendo 3DS hardware" available for each continent. In a statement to outlets including news site VG247, Nintendo said that there is a "possibility" that 3DS software from one region will not work on the hardware from another. "Nintendo 3DS hardware is available in three versions: Japanese, American and European/Australian." the Nintendo statement disclosed. "Nintendo has developed different versions of Nintendo 3DS hardware to take into account different languages, age rating requirements and parental control functionality, as well as to ensure compliance with local laws in each region," the statement added. It also explained that the Nintendo 3DS will offer "network services specifically tailored for each region," adding that Nintendo "wants to ensure the best possible gaming experience for our users." "There is the possibility that Nintendo 3DS software sold in one region will not function properly when running on Nintendo 3DS hardware sold in another," the statement clarified. As a final point, the statement concluded: "Guidance will appear on every packaging of Nintendo 3DS hardware and the accompanying software. If you are in doubt, Nintendo recommends that you only purchase Nintendo 3DS software in the region where you purchased your Nintendo 3DS system." While Nintendo has already revealed details of the 3DS Japanese launch, it has yet to divulge a release date or pricing point for the 3DS hardware in North America, although it has previously stated that the handheld will launch in March. A press event is to be held tomorrow (January 19) by Nintendo of America, which may reveal all these details, plus the expected launch game line-up.
