During a recent chat with Develop, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe revealed the company is already researching augmented reality.
Don't expect Oculus to release its very own HoloLens competitor anytime soon, however, with the CEO adding that AR technology in its current form isn't "compelling enough for mass market consumers."
“[In] VR it’s more using it in your own home or office setting, more inside of rooms, less about running across the street wearing your VR glasses," said Iribe. "That isn’t the challenge VR has to overcome to be successful. Whereas with AR, that is the challenge."
According to Iribe, Oculus is currently fully focused on delivering consumer products, such as its Oculus Rift VR headset - which will reportedly cost over $350 - and likened the company's AR chatter to the way in which Steve Jobs would talk about one day being able to hold a Mac in the palm of your hand decades before the iPhone hit shelves.
