Quick and Easy Ways to Fix Blurry Text in Windows 10

If the text in Windows 10 looks blurry while other things, like images, appear sharp, the issue is often related to how the system handles DPI scaling.

One quick way to address this is by trying a tool called Windows 10 DPI Fix. You can also follow some simple troubleshooting steps in the Settings app to see if that clears things up.

How to Fix Blurry Text on Windows 10

Working through potential resolutions beginning with the most likely issue is the best way to correct Windows 10 blurry text.

  1. Update Windows. Microsoft provides a fix for blurry fonts in Windows 10 through an update via Windows Update. Install all the available updates before moving forward to see if that fixes the problem.

  2. Vary the DPI scaling in Windows Settings. If you have a high-resolution display, Windows will likely automatically set the DPI to 125% or 150%. Changing that value might fix the blurry text. So, if it's set to 125%, for example, change it to 150% to see if the text looks sharper.

  3. Turn off DPI scaling. If changing the scaling doesn't help, turn off the scaling entirely by setting it to 100%. When you do this, the text should no longer be blurry, although it might be too small to read comfortably.

  4. Let Windows automatically fix scaling for apps. There's a toggle you can turn on to do this. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced scaling settings, and then turn on Let Windows try to fix apps so they're not blurry.

  5. Change the DPI settings for specific apps. If only some programs seem to have blurry text, change the display scaling for those programs. You can also enter a custom scaling value to make the text large enough to read if you need to.

To do this, right-click the app's shortcut and go to Compatibility > Change high DPI settings and then tick the box next to Use this setting to fix scaling problems for this program instead of the one in Setting. Select OK > OK to save the changes.

  6. Change the screen resolution. If multiple monitors are connected to your computer, one or more can experience blurry text if they are set to different resolutions. The easiest way to fix this is to not mix-and-match different size monitors and ensure each is set to the same resolution.

  7. Download and open Windows 10 DPI Fix. This free, third-party utility reverts Windows 10 to use the method that older versions of Windows used to scale, which some users have found works better for some configurations of Windows.

If the other troubleshooting steps didn't work, open Windows 10 DPI Fix, select Use Windows 8.1 DPI scaling, and then select Apply.

If your PC is already using older scaling settings, try the other option in Windows 10 DPI Fix called Use Windows 10 default DPI scaling instead.

  8. Update the graphics driver. The video card is responsible for the PC's visuals. Ensure that its drivers are fully updated to address any bugs that could be causing blurry text.

Causes of Windows 10 Blurry Text

Blurry text in Windows 10 happens most often when using a large, high-resolution display. This is because Windows is designed to scale up the text on high-res displays for easier reading. However, the scaling technique can sometimes cause blurry text.

Blurry Text on Websites

If you're seeing blurry text on the websites you visit, this is less of a display issue and more of an intentional action made by the site owner, often to hide content behind a paywall. Blurry web pages can apply to any operating system, not just Windows 10.

In some cases, you can view blurred-out website text by opening the page in private mode.
