Microsoft-owned Minecraft developer Mojang abruptly released a new game this week: Crown and Council, a "casual strategy game" with procedurally-generated elements that's available for free via Steam.

What's most notable here is that Mojang continues to experiment with how it develops and ships games in a post-Minecraft world, even as it continues to put in work on both Minecraft and tie-in games like Telltale Games' Minecraft: Story Mode

According to a company blog postCrown and Council was born out of a game jam and developed solely by Mojang artist Henrik Pettersson. The studio has released several games born from game jams in the past, but never on Steam.

In fact, this is actually the only Mojang-developed game on Steam, since neither Minecraft nor the studio's second game Scrolls are available via Valve's storefront. However, the studio did publish Oxeye Game Studio's Cobalt on Steam earlier this year.
