Consultant (and regular Gamasutra blogger) Thomas Bidaux has published a chart comparing funding data from Kickstarter and Roberts Space Industries with at least one notable takeaway: in 2014, people pledged more money to the development of Star Citizen than to all successful video game Kickstarters combined.

This is chiefly notable because it casts the post-2013 drop in money raised by video game Kickstarters in stark relief, and suggests that Chris Roberts' long-stated goal of gamifying fundraising and keeping it going in perpetuity during development is paying off.

However, it's worth noting (as Bidaux has in his blog posts) that 2014 was a bit of a rough year for video game Kickstarters, as big projects (think: Broken Age, Ouya, Star Citizen) were in short supply.

This year has been better thanks to high-profile projects like Bloodstained and Shenmue 3, but Star Citizen's funding engine continues to chug along (with delays plaguing the project) having recently surpassed 1 million backers and raised nearly $93 million to date.
