Respawn Entertainment On Why APEX LEGENDS Doesn't (And Probably Won't) Feature A Solos Battle Royale Mode

It's been over a year since Apex Legends debuted for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Despite that, the battle royale game still doesn't include a Solos mode. Why is that? Well, Respawn Entertainment recently revealed exactly that.

Apex Legends is an online multiplayer battle royale game available for all of the aforementioned platforms. Traditionally, matches consist of twenty squads of three. Like any other battle royale game, it's survival of the fittest and last alive wins. You spawn in with little but can scavenge around the map for weapons, supplies, and other upgrades. All the while, the playable area shrinks in size.

Unlike Fortnite or any other battle royale game, players assume the roles of characters who each are equipped with special and unique abilities — they're referred to as Legends. For instance, the character called Wraith can create a portal from one place to another which her teammates can then make use of.

What's more, she can temporarily become immune to damage by entering the void. She also has a guardian angel, of sorts, who warns her when an enemy has her in their sights. These are all core components of Apex Legends and they're also the main reasons why there isn't a Solos mode.

You see, Apex Legends is unabashedly team-oriented. Each of the pre-made characters are built to be complimentary to each other. Respawn said as much in recent patch notes regarding the Old Ways event. The developer also mentioned that they have tried out implementing Solos in the past but it didn't bode well for player retention.

Now, what about Solos? When we introduced Solos as a limited-time mode last year we saw it actually negatively impacted the game, especially when it came to new player retention. We’ve also purposely designed Legends and their abilities to compliment teamplay and squad composition, but when played Solo some Legend abilities become useless. These are just some of the reasons we decided not to include Solos in today’s update. We’re still exploring ways to allow a Solo experience, but for now grab a friend (or two) and jump into the arena.

However, a Duos mode was recently added to Apex Legends permanently. By the sounds of it, Duos will likely be the closest players will get to a Solos mode.

Apex Legends is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
