This week on "Best Of Indie Games," we take a look at some of the top independent PC Flash/downloadable titles released over this last week. The goodies in this edition include a handful of Ludum Dare 24 submissions, a humorous interpretation of the action-adventure evolution, a mobile game about punting things, plus a LD24 entry from Plants Vs. Zombies creator George Fan. Here's some recent highlights from IndieGames.com: Game Pick: 'The Balance' (Abe, Reuno, Kuru and Mr_Hk_, browser) "In visually striking Ludum Dare entry The Balance, players zig-zag between good and evil dimensions of planets with undecided fates. Players can choose to destroy the good or evil creatures, and whoever is left evolves to rule the planet." Game Pick: 'Octogeddon' (George Fan, freeware) "In Octogeddon players must grow more limbs while evolving each one into deadlier weapons to wipe out the human race. Players evolve by collecting DNA points from defeated enemies to upgrade the amount and strength of the tentacles." Game Pick: 'Strike of Rage' (deepnight, browser) "Strike of Rage is a slightly silly little beat 'em up that will have you taking on the role of a rather upset desk monkey named Johnny Cash. Because he's unable to get the raise he wanted, he makes the decision to take his money by force." Game Pick: 'Evoland' (Nicolas Cannasse, browser) "Nicolas Cannasse walks players through a healthy heap of humor with his interpretation of action-adventure evolution in Evoland. Players start pre-Zelda on a monochromatic low-resolution computer, and then the display technology and the gameplay rules evolve as players find more chests." Game Pick: 'Granny Smith' (Mediocre AB, commercial indie) "Granny Smith is a side-scrolling action game in which players pursue an apple thief through 36 levels. Despite her age, Granny Smith is surprisingly agile -- she'll smash through windows and perform high-flying stunts as she surmounts physics-heavy challenges on her roller skates." Game Pick: 'McPixel' (Sos, commercial indie) "When McPixel doesn't know how to solve one of the 100 point-and-click, life-or-death puzzles, he just approaches the nearest groin and goes all David Beckham on it. Maybe it's all the pressure the 20-second time limit imposes, but McPixel sure has rash behavior down to an art." Game Pick: 'Shattered Horizon' (Futuremark Games Studio, commercial indie) "Shattered Horizon is an orbital multiplayer FPS with a lot of big ideas. It's atypical zero gravity design is bizarre, unwieldy and takes a lot to get used to, but when you get into the groove it sets the stage for some pretty ridiculous firefights." Game Pick: 'Fibrillation' (Egor Rezenov, commercial indie) "Created on a shoe-string budget, Fibrillation is both unsettling and thought-provoking. Despite being a gorgeous little game, it also allows you to close your in-game eyes." Game Pick: 'Destroy All Color!' (Golden Ruby Games, commercial indie) "Destroy All Color! examines the image within your camera's frame and produces similarly colored shapes on the playfield. By pointing the camera at a yellow object, for instance, you can create a yellow block to destroy like-colored pieces." Game Pick: 'Super Crate Box' (Vlambeer, freeware) "Vlambeer's hit single-screen action game Super Crate Box is now available on Steam as a free download. Super Crate Box challenges players to collect as many crates as possible before dying. Each collected crate awards a random weapon, some of which are more useful than others." Game Pick: 'Snapshot' (Retro Affect, commercial indie) "Snapshot is Retro Affect's spectacular tale of a lost little robot and his amazing camera. Unlike normal cameras, this guy's little device of choice doesn't just capture images, it's capable of transplanting objects and moving them around."
