Smedley: DC Universe Online SOE's 'Fastest-Selling Game Ever'

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley said the company is having a difficult time keeping the recently-released superhero MMORPG DC Universe Online in stock at retail. The executive said in his Twitter feed on Sunday, "Working on out-of-stock problems for DCUO. It's ou[r] fastest selling game ever. Should have more inventory in Monday." That means that DCUO is outpacing sales of past SOE games including EverQuest, The Matrix Online, PlanetSide and Star Wars: Galaxies, among other titles. Smedley did not release hard sales figures for DCUO. SOE released DCUO on January 11 this year on PC and PlayStation 3, although there are no cross-platform servers. Smedley said in a later Twitter post that sales of the game are split "52% PS3 and 48% PC." In October last year, SOE said it would delay the launch of DCUO from early November 2010 to January this year in order to "to address community feedback in a meaningful way," Smedley said at the time. SOE is counting on initial sales to be just the beginning. The game costs $50 on PC and $60 on PS3, and comes with a free month of play. After that, subscription fees kick in at $15 per month, or the option for a $200 lifetime subscription on PC. DCUO incorporates famous comic book heroes and villains from the DC Comics universe, including Superman, Batman, The Flash, The Joker, Wonder Woman and others.
