SONIC THE HEDGEHOG Expected To Earn About $45 Million During Upcoming Opening Weekend
Sonic the Hedgehog arrives in theatres in just three weeks. The upcoming, live-action movie is based on the video game series and character of the same name. Ben Schwartz plays the titular character while Jim Carrey plays Dr. Robotnik, James Marsden plays Tom Wachowski, and Tika Sumpter plays Maddie Wachowski. Jeff Fowler directs.

Earlier this month came estimations that the Sonic the Hedgehog movie would make between $20 million and $30 million during its opening weekend — that was early long-range tracking. More recent tracking supposes that the upcoming video game movie will make between $40 million and $45 million — with optimistic reports (via Deadline) believing it could make as much as $47 million.

The public reportedly holds a positive outlook towards the Sonic the Hedgehog movie after Paramount Pictures took on-board criticism of the movie's initial trailer and character design — delaying the film in order to rework it. The movie trailer that officially revealed the new character design has the highest like-to-dislike ratio on Google of any official studio trailer in the last 3 years.

Things are certainly looking good for Sonic the Hedgehog. Its competition doesn't seem to pose a threat what with Fantasy Island eyeing a $12M-$16M opening and The Photograph expected to earn between $10M-$14M during its first four days in theatres. Whereas the video game movie is looking to make more than half of its $95M budget back from its opening alone.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Sonic the Hedgehog speeds into theatres on February 14th, 2020.
