Sony has revealed that its PlayStation 3 console has shipped over 50 million units worldwide as of March 29. The company also announced that its motion controller PlayStation Move has now shipped more than 8 million units worldwide as of April 3, doubling the total since last November when Sony said that 4.1 million Moves had been shipped. A recent analyst report claimed that the active install base for the PS3 had reached 43.4 million at the close of 2010, overtaking the Xbox 360's 42.9 million. The PlayStation 3 was released at the end of 2006, while the PlayStation Move was made available in September of last year in the U.S. and Europe, and in October in Japan. The Move shipment figures do not include the stand-alone PlayStation Eye camera or stand-alone PlayStation Move navigation controller shipments. It was revealed earlier in the week that the Move outsold Microsoft's motion sensor Kinect by nearly two-to-one in Japan in 2010, although the Kinect has sold more globally, with Microsoft confirming that it sold 10 million units last month.
