German game dev Goodgame Studios is branding its browser game Goodgame Empire the most successful German game of all time after it recently surpassed $800 million in lifetime revenue.
The medieval strategy game launched in 2011 and has clearly been going strong in the years since, with Goodgame releasing over 250 updates during that time.
What's particularly interesting about Empire is that it still runs on Flash, although that won't be the case for much longer. Goodgame says it plans on transitioning from Flash to HTML5 before the discontinued technology ends up on the scrapheap.
"[It's a] mammoth task, we are talking about one million lines of code, that have to be transferred," explained Benjamine Constantine, the person responsible for turning Empire into a HTML5 offering.
"Nevertheless we aim for a seamless transition for our players, meaning the complete feature set as well as regular content updates." Assuming everything goes to plan, the switch should occur in mid 2018.
