The news comes straight from Nintendo, which explained the milestone marks the "highest global sales level for any Nintendo hardware" within that launch window.
The Switch 2 was unveiled in January and launched on June 5.
Nintendo recently told consumers in Japan to expect hardware shortages at launch due to high demand—while there was also pre-order uncertainty in regions like the United States and Canada due to tariffs imposed by U.S. president Donald Trump.
Nintendo expects the Switch 2 to sell 15 million units worldwide during the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2026.
An even more "promising" debut for the Switch 2
The original Switch sold 2.74 million units during its first month on shelves back in 2017. At the time, Nintendo described that debut as "promising."It's a word that might seem slightly strange in hindsight—given we know the Switch is on track to become the company's highest-selling console in history—but it's vital to remember the company was regrouping after the Wii U failed to set the world alight.
As for how the Switch 2 compares to rival hardware, the PlayStation 5 sold 4.5 million units worldwide within around two months of launch.
