Switcheroo: Free-to-play MMO adds a subscription model

We're getting used to hearing about subscription-based MMOs adding a free-to-play mode in order to attract more players, but rarely do we hear the inverse. Massively reports that the Russian version of Astrum Nival's fantasy-themed MMORPG Allods Online is adding a subscription option to its traditionally microtransaction-based business model. The subscription mode eliminates access to the game's item shops, putting all players on an even playing field -- meaning no one can "pay to win." The mode seems aimed at those interested in skill-based PvP combat. Details (in Russian) available here.
