On Twitter today Tekken 7 frontman Katsuhiro Harada answered a question about the game's health by noting that, as of September, the game had sold over 2 million copies across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One since it debuted in early June.

It's a notable milestone, one that Tekken 7 has reached much faster than competitor Street Fighter V, which launched on PlayStation 4 last year and (as of June 30th) had sold roughly 1.7 million copies.

That comparison is important because it supports Harada's comments to Gamasutra earlier this year about how the Tekken team has (seemingly successfully) tried to keep the series relevant and attractive to a broad audience, in the process building in things (like long CG cutscenes) you wouldn't see in a more "hardcore" fighting game like Street Fighter.

"We still fight to overcome the shadow of Street Fighter, the legendary game that started the genre. And also fight to surpass the specter of Virtua Fighter, another legendary series with many fans who love it," Harada said. "In reality, even though it is a VS. fighting game, the majority of our audience are casual players who aren’t trying to be the best in the world, but are satisfied to beat a certain rival, perhaps just the friend next to them."
