Nine years ago, developer Re-Logic introduced the world to their action-adventure sandbox game, Terraria. Over the years, multiple updates have been released, each adding new features, mechanics, and improvements that made the game feel more whole. With today's release of Journey's End (update 1.4), Terraria is now considered "complete" by the developer.
Journey's End is the fourth and final major update for the game, adding new items, enemies, difficulty modes, and gameplay features. The patch notes for update 1.4 are quite extensive with over 1,000 new items, mythical beasts, bosses, NPCs, biomes, and more.
One of the major new features is Journey Mode, a "brand new world and character difficulty mode that offers unprecedented control over the way you play the game." Highlights include the ability to control the weather and spawn rate, a difficulty slider, and item duplication mode.
For those who prefer a challenge, there's also the new Master Mode. This mode is considered to be the highest difficulty in the game, surpassing Expert. It's designed to "test your skills against even tougher challenges, and perhaps be rewarded with some unique rewards from every boss."
The release of Terraria: Journey's End has caused a surge in popularity. Upon its release, the game shot up the top of Steam's most-played games charts, above Grand Theft Auto V and Player Unknown's Battlegrounds.
Celebrating its release, Re-Logic posted the following message to players on their forum:
"This update has been a labor of love, tirelessly worked on by our team over a good while, and we truly feel that it brings Terraria to the next level, to a place where the core game can finally be called 'complete.'"
