Threshold Entertainment Group CEO Larry Kasanoff still holds the rights to make a live-action Tetris movie, and now he's cut a deal with Chinese firm Seven Star Works to form Threshold Global Studios and co-produce an $80 million Tetris film.
This follows Kasanoff's 2014 acquisition of the Tetris film rights, and is notable both as a reminder that yes, someone's trying to make a Tetris movie, and because Deadline reports Kasanoff now sees the project as the first part of a film trilogy.
Chinese businessman Bruno Wu, who cofounded Seven Star Works parent company Seven Stars Entertainment, has been talking about having a Tetris film project in development since late last year. Now the project has a budget, a story, and a pair of co-producers: Wu and Kasanoff.
“Just like playing the game, all the pieces are falling into place with bringing an epic, sci-fi thriller based on Tetris to the big screen,” stated Maya Rogers, CEO of Tetris brand agent Blue Planet Software, in a press release announcing the deal. “We’re very excited to bring Tetris fans worldwide this epic tale in the form of a major motion picture.”
Of course, this isn't Kasanoff's first video game film adaptation rodeo: he produced both the Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat Annihilation movies in the '90s.
