The team behind GTA 5 FiveM and RDR 2 RedM is now part of Rockstar Games

Rockstar has just announced that Cfx.re, the group behind GTA 5 FiveM and RDR 2 RedM, is now officially a part of Rockstar Games. Rockstar claims that by partnering with the Cfx.re team, it will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.

Today, we are proud to announce that https://t.co/RIDVpeoqCS — the team behind the biggest Rockstar roleplay and creator communities, FiveM and RedM — are now officially a part of Rockstar Games: https://t.co/PqVyvdsjIX pic.twitter.com/gd3ETq9iwx

For those unaware, FiveM and RedM are online/multiplayer mods for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. FiveM and RedM allowed PC gamers to play multiplayer on customized dedicated servers. And, in a way, FiveM was better than the official online mode of GTA 5.

Ironically, Rockstar Games claimed back in 2015 that FiveM was an unauthorized multiplayer mod for GTA5 that violated its rules. Not only that, but Rockstar banned that mod. Hell, they even banned players that were using that mod (that weren’t part of the modding team). Then Take-Two sent private investigators in an attempt to shut down this project. And now, almost a decade later, the FiveM team is a part of Rockstar Games. Man, how things have changed.

We seriously hope that both FiveM and RedM will remain free alternative multiplayer/online mods. We are also curious to see what will happen with Cfx.re’s Patreon campaign. Now that the team is part of Rockstar Games, will PC gamers continue supporting them?

Since Rockstar is partnering with the FiveM/RedM team, we can assume that Grand Theft Auto 6 will feature a similar multiplayer mode. And yes, you can be certain that Rockstar will find a way to further monetize that mode.

Now imagine if GTA 6 does not release on launch on PC, especially after this news. And, to be honest, after what happened with Red Dead Redemption Remastered, I wouldn’t be surprised by something like that. Business-wise, a late PC release makes sense. And since Rockstar and Take-Two will do their best to maximize their GTA 6 sales, I can already see this coming.
