After supporting the Asheron’s Call series on and off for nearly two decades, Turbine has announced that the online servers for both the original game and its sequel Asheron’s Call 2 will be shutting down for good next month.
The Asheron’s Call series is the latest of Turbine’s online games to be affected by the studio’s transition to free-to-play mobile development. Just yesterday the company announced that indie studio Standing Stone Games would be taking control of two of Turbine’s other MMO titles, The Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online.
Neither of the Asheron’s Call games were included in that handoff, unfortunately, and as a result both will go offline on January 31, 2017.
“This decision did not come easy, and we know this is disappointing for many of you. This game is a labor of love, and it's not easy for us to bring it to an end,” said a Facebook post announcing the closure.
“We have had a phenomenally long run; one of the longest in the world of MMORPGs, and that in and of itself is a spectacular feat. We are proud of our legacy, and the entire Asheron's Call team has been honored to adventure with you for nearly twenty years. We thank you very much for being a part of it.”
