Marketing and public relations work is almost a Catch-22 for independent game makers. Getting the word out about your game will probably help sell more copies, which will generate more money, but to do decent marketing you need to have money already.

At GDC 2017 experienced indie game PR wizard Chris Dwyer (who's worked on projects like Night in the Woods and Gone Home: Console Edition) took the stage to address this conundrum. He broke down how to arm indie developers with limited financial, mental and time budgets with good (and more importantly efficient) marketing & PR strategies.

Dwyer also offered devs tips on evaluating which parts of marketing & PR their specific game needs, and how to make a template to prioritize and adjust those needs based on monetary and opportunity cost.

It was super-useful and included lots of practical, actionable advice for indie devs on a budget. Now, you can watch it for free over on the official GDC YouTube channel!

About the GDC Vault

In addition to this presentation, the GDC Vault and its new YouTube channel offers numerous other free videos, audio recordings, and slides from many of the recent Game Developers Conference events, and the service offers even more members-only content for GDC Vault subscribers.

Those who purchased All Access passes to recent events like GDC, GDC Europe, and GDC Next already have full access to GDC Vault, and interested parties can apply for the individual subscription via a GDC Vault subscription page. Group subscriptions are also available: game-related schools and development studios who sign up for GDC Vault Studio Subscriptions can receive access for their entire office or company by contacting staff via the GDC Vault group subscription page. Finally, current subscribers with access issues can contact GDC Vault technical support.
