London-based developer and publisher Wargaming.net has licensed BigWorld's MMO technology for its popular free-to-play online game World of Tanks. BigWorld's middleware platform is designed to offer MMO developers an alternative to proprietary, do-it-yourself engines with technology that is designed to reduce risk, cost, and time to market. Wargaming.net launched the WWII-themed, team-based armored vehicle combat game in April, and has so far picked up more than three million registered users (many of whom signed up during its beta testing phase). Other titles built on BigWorld's tech and showing at E3 include Aeria's DOTA-style strategy game Realm of the Titans and Envie Interactive's fantasy virtual world VIE. 38 Studios (Kingdoms of Amalur) also licensed the platform for an unannounced project. "BigWorld technology has been a perfect fit for World of Tanks. As our user base grows rapidly the technology is able to adapt and grow with our needs," says Wargaming.net CEO Victor Kislyi. "We look forward to a long relationship with BigWorld on our current and future projects."
