Sean Shoptaw — Senior Vice President, Games and Interactive at Disney — has recently revealed that the company has some interesting plans for their video game division; particularly having to do with some of their most renowned licenses.
This information was shared by Shoptaw on the stage at the 2020 DICE Summit, which took place this Wednesday at the Aria Convention Center in Las Vegas — revealing that he was there "for one specific reason: to empower you to do really unique things with our [catalog]," adding that they "want to tap into the power of creatives across the industry."
Shoptaw specifically named franchises like EA and Respawn Entertainment's positively received Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and Insomniac Games' critically acclaimed Marvel's Spider-Man; both franchises that offered brand-new stories that even reimagined said licenses.
"We want to dream big and look forward to all the things we can do together," Shoptaw then told the audience.
Disney acquired the publishing rights of Star Wars video games all the way back in 2013, and it is precisely the release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order that breathe some new life into the series.
It is no secret that the new Star Wars Battlefront series hasn't been as successful as EA may have wanted, and Disney now wanting for developers to come up with way to reimagine other licenses — including Star Wars, of course — is exactly what, well, some licenses need.
