$1.8 billion dollars is a staggering amount of money for a single game to earn in a year. While slightly less than the $2.4 billion Fortnite earned in 2018, overall digital games revenue actually increased by 3% reaching $109.4 billion.
As Epic Games' Fortnite revenue stabilized in 2019, the title still topped other free-to-play games, which represented 80% of the total digital games market for the year. The game's mega success is the result of consistent content updates such as October's Chapter 2 installment, monetization via Battle Pass subscriptions and crossover promotions with pop culture phenomenons like Stranger Things and Star Wars.
In addition, Fortnite has been very successful at getting players to spend on in-game content.
After Fortnite, the top free-to-play games in 2019 by revenue were Dungeon Fighter Online and Honour of Kings (both with $1.6 billion); League of Legends and Candy Crush Saga (both at $1.5 billion); and Pokémon Go and Crossfire ($1.4 billion each).
