Slant Six Games, which has developed the Fireteam Bravo, Tactical Strike and Confrontation games in the SOCOM series, is working on a new undisclosed project, and the studio will use Jenkins Software's RakNet 4 networking middleware in its development. Slant Six's director of technology, Paul Martin, says it's useful to use an engine like RakNet in project development because the team can "concentrate on development of the gameplay aspects of networking, without having to worry about per-platform nuances for packet transfer." RakNet is a C++ game networking engine that also supports Xbox 360, Linux, Mac and iPhone development. It includes features like object replication, remote procedure calls, patching, secure connections, voice chat, and real-time SQL logging. Jenkins Software recently joined both Microsoft and Sony's tools and middleware programs, too; the company says Slant Six's current work is multiplatform. "Multi-platform support for mobile, PC and console platforms is a key feature of RakNet," says president Kevin Jenkins."It's great to receive affirmation from such an accomplished development team."
