According to Sakurai's column, the 6 fighters that will be added to the game, as part of the game's season 2, will be the last characters to be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and that they have no future plans for the game; the game is now almost finished, Sakurai revealed.
What may come as a shock to some, and an expected news to others, is the fact that neither Nintendo nor Sakurai are planning a new entry in the series. While this may sound like Super Smash Bros. is coming to an end, Sakurai has stated in the past that he was retiring, and has always come back to surprise fans.
Sakurai does promise fans of the long-running crossover fighting series that he will give it his all as he works on the remaining 6 fighters being added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. On that same note, Sakurai also reveals that he had nothing to do with the selection process; all characters were already chosen by Nintendo.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate truly is the most ambitious title in the series, as well as the most ambitious crossover fighting game in history. If Sakurai wants to finally call it quits after all 6 characters are finally released, he has earned the right to leave the series for good; fans just wish he could keep working on the series forever, but that's his decision to make.

Sakurai and Nintendo aren't planning any future entries in the Smash series right now. So he doesn't know what will happen.

Adding content to this game little by little extends Smash Ultimate's life. So Sakurai plans to give it his all for the last 6 fighters.
