LoveFilm Announces Movie Streaming On UK PS3s For November

European movie rent-by-mail and streaming service LoveFilm announced today that PlayStation 3 owners in the United Kingdom will be able to use their systems to stream the service's collection of online movies this November. Users who subscribe to one of LoveFilm's plans, which start at £5.99 per month and include rent-by-mail service, will have access to thousands of streamed movies directly from the PS3's cross-media bar, without the need for a specific disc such as the one required for a similar Netflix PS3 streaming service in North America. The LoveFilm service already offers streaming movies and pay-per-view download options to owners of internet-enabled Sony Bravia TVs and Blu-ray players. Electric Pig reports that the PS3 service will not include the pay-per-view rental option, perhaps owing to similar offerings from Sony. Earlier this year, Sony announced a partnership with rival streaming and download-on-demand service Mubi. The status of that partnership, which was later pegged for an October release, remains unclear. The LoveFilm deal adds 3 million UK PS3 owners as potential additions to LoveFilm's current subscriber base of 1.4 million. Streaming movies have been a popular features on all three major home consoles in the United States and Canada, where Netflix subscribers can use their systems to access a library of thousands of movies and TV episodes.
