Microsoft's Next-Generation Console Reportedly Isn't Called "Xbox Series X" But Rather Just "Xbox"
During The Game Awards 2019, Microsoft unveiled their next-generation console and what was seemingly its name — Xbox Series X. At the time, not much fervour was sparked by this name. Regardless, a Microsoft representative has clarified that Xbox Series X isn't actually the name of the next-generation console.

"The name we're carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox," the Microsoft representative said in a statement to Business Insider, "And at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X." It's certainly confusing — especially in comparison to the simple naming conventions that Sony has got going on with the PlayStation 5 and the like.

It seems that "Xbox Series X," is the name of the next-generation of Microsoft's consoles as a whole but "Xbox" is the name of the specific console that was revealed a couple of days ago. "Similar to what fans have seen with previous generations, the name 'Xbox Series X' allows room for additional consoles in the future," the representative continued.

As you can see, it appears that the representative is teasing the other variations of the standard Xbox that will inevitably release during the next-generation of gaming — a la the Xbox One S to the Xbox One. This coincides with rumours that Microsoft are already working on next-generation console variants such as an Xbox built solely for digital downloads rather than discs.

All in all, it's confusing and unclear but it will be interesting to see how this naming convention plays out — and if Microsoft will come to their senses and announce that their next-generation console will actually be called the Xbox Two.
