The eighth console generation began back in November 2013 with the release of the PlayStation 4 (and the Xbox One). Since then, the PlayStation 4 has gone on to become the second best-selling home game console of all time — only behind the PlayStation 2. Suffice it to say, the PlayStation 4 was a resounding success, especially from a sales perspective.
From November 2013 to March 2014, the PlayStation 4 sold seven-million units. During the PlayStation 4's first fiscal year, the console managed to sell so much that it knocked Nintendo off from the top spot of home console sales for the first time in eight years. Sony intends to break those records once again with the upcoming PlayStation 5 console release.
The company is reportedly manufacturing fifteen million PlayStation 5 consoles for the upcoming launch on November 19th. Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, recently told a Korean outlet that they are expecting the PlayStation 5 to exceed the immense sales that the PlayStation 4 achieved during its first fiscal year.
Sony certainly has high expectations for the upcoming next-generation console. And while we're on the topic of PlayStation 5 and Korea, it's said that the second round of pre-orders will begin over there on October 7th (via Daniel Ahmad).
Jim Ryan, the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said in an interview with Korean media that he expects PS5 to sell more in its first fiscal year than PS4.
