Sony's PlayStation Vita handheld console, released in Japan last week, has sold over 300,000 units in its opening weekend. The PS Vita launched on December 17, and saw thousands of Japanese gamers queueing outside retail stores in the hope of getting their hands on the latest slice of PlayStation hardware. According to data from Famitsu's Enterbrain, and as reported by Andriasang, the console sold a total of 321,407 units during its first two days on sale. [Update: Tracking firm Media Create has now revealed that the console sold just over 325,000 in total.] In comparison, the Nintendo 3DS sold 371,326 in its opening weekend earlier this year, while the Vita's predecessor, the PSP, sold 166,074 during its launch week. Sony has also issued a public apology following launch day issues with Vita system freezes and touchscreen problems, stating that it is "sorry for any inconvenience to customers." The console required a day-one firmware upgrade, due to a number of problems reported by users. The company has provided a troubleshooting section on the Japanese Sony website for any users still having issues with their console.
