Online game developer and publisher Trion Worlds announced that it will launch its first game, subscription-based fantasy MMORPG Rift, in North America on March 1st and in Europe (with Ubisoft distributing) on March 4th. In Rift, players take on the role of either a noble Guardian or technomagical Defiant, exploring the world of Telara where "eight primal forces battle for control in an ever-changing landscape". Gamers can build their own class with the Ascended Soul System, battle others in player-versus-player combat, take part in raids, and more. Though many MMO companies have favored the free-to-play business model for their titles, consumers will pay a standard monthly subscription rate of $14.99 to play Rift in addition to buying the game online or at retail stores -- Trion is offering Standard ($49.99), Digital Collector's ($59.99), and Retail Collector's Editions ($79.99). Those who preorder the game will receive a month of complimentary game time, one of three exclusive in-game pets, access to closed-beta events, eligibility to participate in a head-start period beginning February 24th, and more. Gamers that choose a subscription pricing plan before March 15th will also receive a reduced monthly rate of $9.99. Founded in 2006, Trion is headquartered in Redwood Shores and has development studios in San Diego and Austin. Besides Rift, the company has two other projects slated: End of Nations, a real-time strategy MMO, and an unnamed online game co-produced with cable TV channel SyFy. "The launch of Rift is the culmination of our tireless efforts over the past several years to bring players the most complete, full-featured, and dynamic online game they've ever experienced," says Trion Worlds CEO Lars Buttler. He adds, "Through the dedication, creativity, and incredible track record of our veteran development team, we've been able to create an exceptionally polished and immersive online world filled with adventure, surprise, and beauty. We can't wait to share Rift with players around the world."
